The Junior Cycle Programme demands that students complete two Classroom-Based Assessments (CBAs) in all ten subjects. One assessment takes place in 2nd Year followed by another in 3rd Year in all subjects but Irish. Both assessments in Irish will be conducted in 3rd Year.
The CBAs will be undertaken in the coming weeks, a schedule for which is posted in the Google Calendar on the school website. Classroom-Based Assessments provide students with opportunities to demonstrate their learning and skills in ways not always possible in pen and paper examinations. They are undertaken within normal class contact time, to a national timetable and are facilitated by the class teacher. CBAs are a formal part of the State Examinations process and all material submitted must be the original work of the students. The requirements for each subject are set out in the attached document.
The results will be forwarded to parents in due course and will be recorded in the Junior Cycle Profile of Achievement using the following descriptors:
- Exceptional
- Above expectations
- In line with expectations
- Yet to meet expectations
Once the Second Year Classroom-Based Assessment (CBA) is completed, students in Third Year will complete a written Assessment Task on what they have learned and the skills and competencies that they have developed in that assessment. This task is undertaken during normal class time and will be sent to the State Examinations Commission (SEC) for marking. This assessment task will account for 10% of the overall mark for the final examination. At the end of Third Year, students will sit the final SEC examination in June, for 2 hours, which will account for 90% of the SEC grade. All subjects, other than Irish, English and Maths will be examined in common level papers.
