Letter from the Principal to TY Parents

Letter from the Principal to TY Parents

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Thank you for your support for the school at this challenging time. We are aware of how difficult online education can be and we appreciate your encouragement of your daughter to engage with online classes and some of the additional activities provided.
Many teenagers have found the lockdown particularly difficult. I have attached 3 important booklets (see the bottom of this email), from the National Educational Psychological Service which you may find helpful should your daughter be in distress. You will also find a link below to a podcast with relaxation techniques. Practical advice for students will be forwarded in the coming days. The Guidance Counsellors, Chaplain, Ms Breen and I continue to meet parents and students on Zoom and are available at all times should your daughter be in need. The contact details for all involved in student support are available on the website or through the office at office@loretoabbeydalkey.ie.
During the next month, we will be helping Transition Years make informed subject choices for the Leaving Certificate. Your daughter had the opportunity to complete the Cambridge Occupational Analysts My Future Choices questionnaire. This is an academic measure and interest-based questionnaire, designed specifically to match your daughter with preferentially sequenced career identities, coupled alongside courses which she may wish to explore further. A personalised profile is generated for each student. Dr. Brian Mooney, Irish Times columnist and Careers Advisor, will facilitate an online workshop via Zoom for students on Tuesday afternoon next, February 2nd from 14.00-16.00. Brian will bring the group through the profile and discuss its implications for career and subject choice. Parents are invited to sit in on the workshop with their daughters. For security reasons, access to the meeting is through your daughter's student account and for data protection reasons, the meeting will not be recorded. Students will be required to access and print their profiles which will be available online from 09.30 on Monday February 1st. Parents are invited to email specific questions on subject choice/careers to guidance@loretoabbeydalkey.ie and they will be addressed during the presentation. A chat facility will also be available. An information booklet on the subject content and assessment modes for each subject will be available online later in the week.
Following the meeting, the girls are encouraged to seek the advice of our two Guidance Counsellors, Ms Shortt and Dr. Berry, their subject teachers, or the Principal and Deputy Principal should clarification be required. The deadline for completing the subject choices will be Monday March 1st.
I would hope that both you and your daughter will find the workshop informative and helpful and I look forward to meeting you virtually on Tuesday.
With kind regards,
Robert Dunne,
