Welcome to the Guidance Counselling page for Loreto Abbey Dalkey.

All students are very welcome to meet the Guidance Counsellors at any point throughout their school journey.  They may wish to clarify some point of information in relation to subject choice, course requirements, or perhaps talk in confidence about an issue that is of concern to them.

We encourage all the girls here at Loreto Abbey to get to know the Guidance Counsellors, and we make a particular effort to visit the junior year groups during college awareness week in November. The guidance notice board is located beside the guidance office and is updated with information on upcoming college events.

Each year, guidance classes are provided on a weekly basis to transition year and sixth year students. Fifth years avail of a 15 week guidance programme.  Our senior cycle classes are a combination of personal development, career exploration, research skills and presentations from guest speakers. In first year, students partake in short module which introduces career exploration from the perspective of strengths and values, as well as emphasising the importance of decision making around subject choice.

Formal aptitude and careers interest tests are conducted in the first term of fourth year.  Informal career interest inventories also form part of the guidance programme in fifth and sixth year.

Students can arrange to meet either Ms. Shortt or Ms. Matthews by using an appointment request form.  Please note that our school chaplain, Sr. Mary Delahunty is also key person in the student support team, supplementing the guidance service with appointments for junior students.

With regard to careers, we endeavour to meet with all sixth year girls individually in the first term. An appointment will be made to see fifth year students in the second term.
