With over 11 teams participating in a wide range of competitions such as the All-Ireland Cup, the All-Ireland League, the Leinster League and the Loreto League, Basketball is an exciting sport to get involved in. Basketball players train regularly with experienced coaches in our impressive indoor Basketball courts and participate in matches at all levels. Teams have proven very successful in both regional and national levels in recent years, regularly reaching the last stages of the All-Ireland competitions at a number of age grades. Notably, our Senior A Basketball team reached the World Championships in Serbia in 2022/’23, which was a proud moment for our school. With over 160 matches played in 2024/’25, Basketball is thriving in Loreto Abbey Secondary School and welcomes new players.

Working out in our well-equipped gym overlooking the Irish Sea ensures that our athletes, some of whom have broken national records, are well prepared for competitions.

Our GAA teams achieved notable success in 2023/’24, winning the Leinster Junior and Senior Division C titles, and the U14 team won the Scoop Cup. The teams will compete in the Leinster Division B in 2024/’25. Training takes place regularly on our astro turf pitch and in Cuala, with a number of our players playing for Dublin. New players are welcome to enjoy this exciting sport.

Our golf team is going from strength to strength, competing in an official GUI event and a golf day organised by Loreto Bray. Our Golf team represented the school at the All-Ireland Golf Championships in 2024. This is a fantastic sport for young women to participate in and involves skill and strategy.

  • Gym

Running on a treadmill overlooking Dalkey Island is undoubtedly a refreshing way to begin one’s school day, and our students have access to our well-equipped gym before and after school. Located in our state-of-the-art Sports Hall, our Gym provides our students with an opportunity to engage in strengthening, conditioning and toning exercises. All students are welcome to join.

As a coastal school, our sailors have access to a number of harbours, including Colliemore Harbour, Bulloch Harbour and Dún Laoghaire. Sailors represented our school at the Shanahan Cup over three days in November, and all of our Transition Year students participate in sailing over the course of the year.

  • Soccer

Soccer is a fun team sport, and this year we entered two teams into the FAI League and Cup competitions. Our First Year team and Minor team train regularly and play in a variety of matches. With 42 swimmers at the helm of our coastal school, we competed in the Loreto Swimming Gala in the National Aquatic Centre this year. We were awarded the top Loeto school overall for the last two years running. Students participate in the Einster competition through their clubs throughout the year and have had notable success over the years.
